What Are Packaging Recommendations?

Packaging Recommendations are automated instructions that define which box should be selected based on a combination of:

  • Product category

  • Quantity

  • Specific product attributes

This approach provides full control over the expected package dimensions and packaging outcomes.
However, it also requires additional overhead to maintain and configure detailed mappings between products and packaging materials.

How Are Package Sizes Calculated?

Packaging recommendations follow a standardized matching process rather than being product-specific.

For every order:

  • The system matches the product attributes and quantity range against the packaging recommendation mappings (as seen in the sample file).

  • For each successful match, a corresponding Box ID is assigned to the package.

  • The package dimensions and weight are populated automatically from the mapped packaging material columns:

    • Package Box Length

    • Package Box Width

    • Package Box Height

    • Package Box Weight

  • If multiple matches are found within the same package (due to different products being combined):

    • The largest matched box is selected to ensure all products fit safely.

This process ensures each package receives an optimized packaging recommendation based purely on configuration data, without needing manual intervention.

Additional Specifics

  • Ignored Product Models
The following models are excluded from automatic packaging and should be handled via Bundling Rules:

    • ProductModelBrandedInsert

    • ProductModelBrandedSticker

    • ProductModelFulfillmentService

    • ProductModelBrandedStickerCommercial

    • ProductModelBrandedInsertCommercial

    • ProductModelBrandedStickerAndInsert

    • ProductModelPassepartout

  • Framed Products
    Only the frame is configured.
Poster elements in framed products are ignored during packaging recommendation.

  • Multipart Products
    Currently supported at part-level only.
(Example: Inner and Cover parts of a photobook must be configured separately.)
