Maintaining accurate inventory levels is crucial, even if automated stock consumption isn’t configured for every SKU. One effective method is manually transferring items to designated production locations. This allows your system to differentiate between what’s stored in the warehouse and what’s already being used in production, improving both visibility and planning.

Difference Between Storage and Production Locations

Inventory is tracked across two types of locations:

  • Storage Locations – Represent your warehouse stock.

  • Production Locations – Represent stock moved closer to machinery, expected to be used soon.

For example, if you have 60 units of a SKU—40 in storage and 20 near your machines—moving the 20 to a production location ensures they’re not mistakenly considered available for general use. This separation helps avoid stock discrepancies and supports accurate planning.

How to Transfer Inventory to a Production Location

You can transfer stock using either the web application or the mobile app.

Using the Web Application

  1. Go to Inventory > Transform Inventory.

  2. Select the storage location you’re moving items from (e.g., "Zone 1 Rack 2 Shelf 2").

  3. Choose the Production Location you’re transferring to.

    • Example: For keychain production, select the corresponding keychain area.

  4. Enter the Quantity to transfer (e.g., 10 units).

  5. Confirm the transfer.

After confirmation, the system will update the quantities in both locations. Items moved to production are no longer considered warehouse stock.

Using the Mobile App

  1. Open the Warehouse Menu in the Inventory section.

  2. Select Transfer stock.

  3. Locate the item by scanning its barcode or entering the SKU.

  4. Choose the Production Location and confirm the transfer.

Creating a Production Location

To ensure stock in specific areas isn’t counted as general warehouse inventory, you must flag them correctly.

  1. Navigate to Warehousing > Locations.

  2. Create a new location or edit an existing one.

  3. Mark the location as a Production Location.

This setup allows the system to treat inventory in those locations as consumed or ready for immediate use.

Why Manual Transfers Matter

Even without automation, you can maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory records by manually moving stock to production locations. This proactive approach improves inventory control, prevents errors in stock availability, and ensures smoother production operations.

FAQ

Can I reverse a transfer from production back to storage?
Yes, you can perform another transfer following the same steps, choosing the production location as the source.

Will transferred items still appear in inventory reports?
Yes, but they’ll be categorized under their respective location types—either storage or production.

Do I need to set up production locations for every product?
Only for items where you want to separate consumed or nearly-consumed stock from general storage.

Is this process mandatory if I already have automated consumption?
Not necessarily. This is most useful when automation isn't set up or for items with unpredictable usage patterns.
