When creating a custom product model in GelatoConnect, one of the most important steps is deciding which attributes define the structure and uniqueness of your product variants. This is what enables you to control configuration, pricing, production logic, and SKU generation.

Below is a step-by-step guide to help you choose the right attributes when setting up your model.

1. Start with the Production Process

Ask yourself:

Is this product manufactured (e.g., printed) or picked and packed as-is?

  • Printed products (e.g. posters, apparel, business cards) usually need attributes that affect production, such as size, material, color, or orientation.

  • Pick & Pack products (e.g. pre-produced items like mugs or gadgets) may need fewer attributes as they often don’t have as intricate production workflows.

2. Identify the Product’s Key Characteristics

Think through the physical or visual properties of the product:

  • Does it come in different sizes?

  • Are there material choices?

  • Is color relevant for the customer or production?

  • Are there optional features (e.g. coating, lamination, finishing)?

Tip: Think like your customer and your production team. Attributes must reflect real-world choices and operational needs.

3. Choose Attributes That Define Uniqueness

For each characteristic, ask:

Does this attribute help uniquely identify a product variant?

If yes, it likely belongs in your model. For example:

Product

Likely Attributes

T-Shirt

Brand, Style Code, Size, Color

Poster

Size, Paper Type, Finish

Calendar

Size, Paper Type, Finish, Binding Type

Only include attributes that are essential to generate a distinct SKU. If an attribute doesn’t change how the product is made or how it's sold, it may be better handled as metadata or excluded.
