[Organizing Production - GCW] How to Use the Print Operator Console

Written by Kyle Sawyer

The Print Operator Console is designed to give print operators full visibility and control over daily plate production. From tracking progress to reassigning jobs between presses, this console is your central hub for monitoring, managing, and optimizing production efficiency.

Overview

The Print Operator Console allows you to:

  • View all plates scheduled for production.

  • Track daily progress and compare performance over time.

  • Search and filter plates easily.

  • Group and manage plates by customer, machine, or batch.

  • Perform bulk actions such as moving, marking, or downloading plates.

  • Adjust production assignments between dates and presses.

Navigating the Console

When you open the console, you’ll see several key sections:

1. Plates List
This is the main view, displaying all plates to be produced (e.g., today’s production). Each row represents a plate and includes details such as:

  • Plate ID

  • Status (Pending / Printed)

  • Customer name

  • Machine type

  • Substrate type

  • Sheet size & quantity

  • Batch ID

  • Time in queue

2. Progress Bar (Top Section)
At the top of the screen, you’ll find today’s progress indicator, which shows how much of the day’s workload has been printed so far.

3. Performance Statistics
You can monitor production efficiency over time with these quick comparisons:

  • Yesterday’s production

  • Same day last week

  • Last 7 days

  • Last 30 days

These insights help operators and managers identify productivity trends or bottlenecks.

Searching and Filtering

You can search plates by ID, even with partial matches.
Example: typing 2949 will return all plate IDs containing that sequence.
This makes it easier to locate specific jobs without knowing the full ID.

You can also filter or group the list by:

  • Day (see what’s planned for a specific date)

  • Customer (view all jobs for a client)

  • Machine (check what’s assigned to each press)

  • Batch (track grouped jobs)

  • Product (view all plates linked to a product line)

Performing Bulk Actions

When you select multiple plates, a Bulk Actions Menu appears. Available actions include:

  • Mark as Printed – Update the status of all selected plates.

  • Download Plates – Retrieve plate files (PDFs).

  • Move to Date – Reschedule production to another day.

  • Move to Press – Reassign plates to a different printing machine.

Example: Moving Plates to Another Press
If one press is overloaded or under maintenance, you can easily shift jobs to another machine:

  1. Select one or more plates.

  2. Click Move to Press.

  3. Choose the target press.

  4. Confirm the action.

Note: Moving plates to a new press will cancel the original plates and generate new ones for the selected press. You’ll see the updated plates once the repositioning process completes (not instantly).

Moving Plates by Date

You can also reschedule production:

  1. Select the plates you want to move.

  2. Choose Move to Date.

  3. Pick a new date (e.g., tomorrow).

  4. Confirm the move.

This helps balance workload across days or handle unexpected delays.

Batch Management

When working with batches, remember:

  • You must move the entire batch, not just one plate from it.
Each batch represents a grouped set of plates that should stay together for process consistency.

Plate Preview & Downloads

Click on a plate to:

  • Preview the plate.

  • Download the PDF file.

  • View the file name and associated data.

This is particularly useful when you need to check content before printing or send files to another department.

Tips for Using the Console Effectively

  • Set up workflows first: The console functions only when your production paths (presses, dates, batches) are properly configured in the workflow.

  • Group strategically: Grouping by machine or customer can make it easier to manage large print volumes.

  • Use bulk actions to save time: Instead of handling plates one by one, select all relevant ones and perform updates together.

  • Monitor progress daily: Use the top progress indicator and historical stats to spot trends early and act on performance issues.
